Essay assignment – The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Writing about a symbol in Huck Finn.

  1. Select a symbol that figures prominently and dramatically in the novel – an item with the novel could not exist.
  2. Select a symbol that has meaning not just in one scene but in the work as a whole.
  3. Compile some notes that show how the symbol relates to a theme of the work or a main idea. (You will turn in these notes as well.)

Suggestions for writing the paper.

  1. The first paragraph should include a thesis statement that identifies the symbol to be discussed and identifies a theme or main idea of the novel.
  2. The next paragraph should give the writer’s interpretation of the symbol. Among items to include would be a discussion of the symbol itself and what it symbolizes in the novel.
  3. Another paragraph should explain how the symbol informs all parts of the novel – beginning, middle, and end.
  4. Explain how this symbol influences a character in the novel. How is he impacted by the symbol? Is there growth of character based on the symbol?
  5. A final paragraph should include how the symbol reveals a theme if this has not been previously discussed.
  6. Conclude

Length: 600-800 words

MLA format, Typed, Times New Roman 12, Doubled Spaced, 1-inch margins

The title page must include the following items: your name, the name of the work, and the date

You will be graded 100 points on content (50 points), organization (25 points), and mechanics (25 points). Points will be deducted for failure to follow instructions.

What Shakespeare is trying to say in this quote is that it is better to do something way in advance rather than doing it late. The impact of this quote inspires me to try to work hard in order to perform tasks in a routinely and timely manner.
